(Essay Plan UN-FINISHED) What Factors led to the decline of town or city centre cinemas in the late 1970s and 1980s?

Intro
A combination of things led to the decline of town or city centre cinemas in late 1970s and early 1980s such as hollywood film industries building Multiplexes, the rise of teen audiences becoming more popular due to spectacle driven films, also Multiplexes being built in shopping centres with all these extra activities attached to the film experience and the technology of film VFX and the technology used in Multiplexes to view blockbusters.

Social: Teen audiences becoming more popular in multiplexes because viewing films becomes a more social gathering as apposed to a "event", which in cases devalues films.

Economical: The hollywood film industries that built the multiplexes, show the blockbusters that they made, therefor saving the hollywood film industries money because they don't have to pay money for distribution.

Technological: Blockbusters became progressively more popular because of the spectacle

Production:Economic influence

Economic
Jaws was the first ever blockbuster, it was also an event movie due to all the hype it received, making a lot of money in return. The Hollywood film industry saw this as a ultimate success and then went on to make nothing but blockbusters so that they have guaranteed revenue.

Godfather was also a blockbuster but which received a large revenue but also boasted a sizeable budget because of its "A list" actors.

PDE

Production- how they make the film
Distribution- how they get it to cinemas + marketing
Exhibition- sales, revenue from advertising - which films are shown, where and experience

Films are formulaic- effects etc

Box office focused on revenue
Box office figures skyrocketed meaning cinema attendance increased dramatically

Write 35 minute timed essay answering question: what factors led to the decline of the town or city centres....

VFX/ technology- Star Wars meant people went to multiplex cinemas
Massively marketed- jaws
E.T first VCR released and hugely pirated
godfather was a blockbuster counterpoint

Hollywood film studio was the reason for multiplex cinemas to make money and advertise their own films

Big recession in 70's meaning decrease in cinema attendance

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg made industrial light and magic

1. Milton keys in Birminghamshire 1983 was the first multiplex cinema to be built

2. The cinema attendance was low at this time which is why the multiplexes were invested in and built in the UK to advertise the blockbusters

3. Saturday night fever in 1977, Jaws in 1975, Star Wars 1977, E.T 1982

4. Built on the upper floor of shopping centres near the motorway so easy access to the destination also had other attraction such as restaurants and shops to draw in the numbers

5. People were intrigued by new and exciting experience at the multiplex cinema with the illusion of choice meaning flea pits were discarded as the old ways.

6. Better sounds and audio quality, free parking, more of a variety meaning there were more screens meaning more seats meaning more people meaning more money for film distributors

7. Tv was invented meaning fashionability of stay at home came around and invention of VCR meaning people could watch films at home, recession affected what people could do due to lack of income.

In the UK there was resection which meant people couldn't go to the cinema much as they had no money. But teens were more available to visit cinemas then adults.

The blockbusters saved the film industry, it was a idea from the Americans along with a multiplex.

Owned by film studios so that they could have control over the multiplexes.

What social, economic & technological context gave rise to the blockbuster film from 1975-1983?

Technological:
- Cinema viewing of movies became less popular in the 1980's due to video tapes and VCR's bringing movies to peoples homes. Making the "summer blockbuster" a draw back to make cinemas more popular to the public again.

- VFX was used in blockbusters to create spectacle to draw the public back, instead of taking the easy/cheaper option of staying at home.

Social:
- Teen audience's were a huge influence on "summer blockbusters" as they were the most free people at this time, and were the most social.

- New era films made, such as "Disco" and in 1977 "Saturday night fever" was made to appeal mostly to the new teenage audience.

Economic:
- New markets would be made due to the constant shift in demographics.

- More T.V.'s at home, which meant less cinema addmissons. This then lead on to the blockbuster and its spectacle based films as a last resort for income to again draw people back to cinemas.

- Multiplex cinemas more ment more variety of films. Which would lead to multiple blockbusters being shown at once.

- Multiplex cinemas are usually out of the way usually found to be on the upper floor of a shopping centre but has restaurants and other attractions to bring the demographic in. it is a business that brings funding in to just pay out for more cinema space and new exciting things to bring people in.

Location Report

Stacy's room (Salisbury house/ Dan's room)

The reason i chose this location in particular is because it is a very it is a very simple "boys" room which when shown in juxtaposition with Danielle's character it will show how different both Danielle and Stacy are.
Also this is in a council area, somewhat similar to the location of the initial film. Keeping the same style of the original film.
It is fortunate for me, with this being a friends house, this location will be easily accessed and actually taking the 9 key frames will also be quite simple.

Danielle's House/Hallway (Salisbury house)

Iv chosen these locations as they both fit how i pictured the scene when i came up with the idea, you can see straight through the hallway to the back of the house. Again these are both easily accessible so there isn't any issue with me using either of these locations in particular.

Street shot (St Albans RD)

This is a relatively simple shot which is just going to have Danielle walking toward the camera. Easily accessible road, quite close to another location iv chosen. There are no specifics to this location, i merely needed a road on which to have this shot.

Gym montage (Leigh fitness suite)

Also, for a part of the 9 key frames, there will be a sort of  "montage" of Stacy taking Danielle to the gym. for this i will use the Leigh fitness suite. Iv chosen this because it is usually associated with men, and all the gym equipment available, it will be a good way to make Danielle appear she is becoming more masculine, so i thought this would be a decent place to shot this scene.
Considering this area is used rather a lot, it will be quite hard to gain access while its not really busy. on the other hand though, it would probably be good if it was busy, and had a bunch of men there because it would help the juxtaposition of my characters.
